Cottage with emerald velvet

Two floors, one language

To design the interiors of a 225 m² house: on the ground floor, a hall with a grand staircase, a living room with a dining area, a kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom; upstairs, a sitting hall, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The facade and interiors had to speak one classical language, while the house stays comfortable for everyday life.

Marble, mouldings and emerald velvet

The ground-floor hall is laid in white marble with a dark border, with panelled walls, dark wood panels and a marble wall with a round mirror above a brass console. A staircase with marble treads and brass railings rises along a timber wall. The living room has emerald tufted sofas, pale armchairs, round marble tables and a cascading crystal chandelier, and the television wall is backlit onyx between black shelves. The dining area has a long white table and green velvet chairs.

The kitchen has white fronts, glass cabinets in brass frames and a black marble splashback, facing a wall of dark fluted panels with a television and plum-coloured curtains. The ground-floor bedroom has green velvet curtains, an upholstered bed, glass-fronted wardrobes either side of the window and a green chaise in the bay.

Upstairs, the hall is a second living room with a grey sofa, rust velvet armchairs and a stone table. One bedroom has dark blue velvet curtains, a grey quilted bed and walnut panels; the other has a headboard wall of green velvet panels with mirror inserts and a sitting area in the bay. The bathrooms are in marble: one with green marble, pebble-shaped mirrors and a bath by the window, the other with onyx, a brass screen with leaves and black hexagonal tiles.
