Cottage with an oriental touch

A neoclassical cottage in Dushanbe: white panelled walls, marble floors, crystal and walnut panels with brass. Alongside a contemporary living room, the house has a room for gatherings in the local tradition, with a low dastarkhan table and kurpacha mattresses on the floor.

Task

Two living rooms, two characters

To fit two living rooms into a 120 m² house: a contemporary one with upholstered furniture and a television, and a room for large gatherings with a low table and seating on the floor.

The hall with its staircase to the upper floor and the kitchen had to set a shared, light neoclassical tone for the whole house.

Solution

Panelling, walnut and brass

The hall has white panelled walls, a marble floor and crystal chandeliers; a staircase with dark, lit treads rises behind a glass balustrade. A tall double door is clad in herringbone timber with round brass pulls, glazed doors with decorative glazing bars lead to the garden, and a console stands beneath a round mirror in a brass ring. The kitchen has light grey fronts, a marble splashback, an upper row of glass cabinets in brass frames and timber columns.

The living room has grey modular sofas, a rust velvet bench, a marble coffee table and a chandelier of white branches. The television wall is clad in walnut panels with golden diagonal inlays, beside a backlit display cabinet.

The second living room is built around a low white table running the length of the room, surrounded by kurpacha mattresses and cushions in patterned red fabrics, with rugs on the floor. Glass display cabinets in brass frames flank a grey marble wall with a television, and a chandelier of amber glass petals hangs above the table. The bathroom has marble in lilac tones, a black vanity with fluted fronts, walnut niches and a brass-framed shower.
