Cottage with an emerald stairwell

A two-storey 76 m² cottage in Yemelyanovo. Pale walls, warm wood and concrete-look doors meet a deep emerald green, which colours the hall wall, the kitchen, the walls by the stairs and feature walls in the attic.

Task

One house across two floors

To fit a living room with a kitchen-diner, two bedrooms, a walk-in wardrobe, two bathrooms and a hall with storage into 76 m², and to make the staircase part of the interior.

The house is small, so it had to read as a whole: one colour and one set of materials run through both floors.

Solution

Emerald, walnut and concrete

The hall sets the tone for the house: an emerald wall, a half-moon mirror with green backlighting, a floating bench and console, a tall cabinet with open shelves and floor-to-ceiling walnut cupboards. By the front door hangs a gallery of black-and-white photographs.

The living room opens onto the kitchen-diner. It has a pale corner sofa, a wooden coffee table, a ring chandelier of glass globes, a TV on a walnut panel and emerald curtains. The kitchen has emerald base units, lit walnut wall cabinets, a concrete-look splashback and built-in appliances, with a linear pendant above the dining table.

A wooden staircase with lit treads and a black handrail rises along the emerald wall to the attic corridor. In the bedroom under the roof slope, the headboard wall and ceiling are clad in wooden slats; opposite the bed is an emerald wall with a TV and a backlit irregular mirror. The guest bedroom has navy walls, a wooden world map, a mirrored sliding wardrobe and a pendant of white globes.

The walk-in wardrobe under the eaves has lit shelves for shoes and bags, drawers and hanging rails. The ground-floor bathroom is in dark marble and wood, with a round mirror on green tiles. The attic bathroom is light: white marble, a backlit arched mirror, emerald panels behind the WC and green herringbone tiles above the bath.
